Every great project starts with a question.
Not, “Can it be done?”
But rather, “What if?”
Project ET: Expedition Touring is the pursuit of one of those questions.
At its core, Project ET is an independent motorcycle design study centered around a simple idea:
What if the world’s greatest touring motorcycle became even more capable of exploring the roads less traveled?
Why the Gold Wing?
There are countless motorcycles that could have served as the foundation for this project.
I chose the Honda Gold Wing because it has already proven itself.
For nearly fifty years, the Gold Wing has earned a reputation for exceptional reliability, long-distance comfort, thoughtful engineering, and the ability to make impossible distances feel routine. Few motorcycles have influenced the touring world the way the Gold Wing has.
That reputation deserves respect.
Project ET is not an attempt to replace the Gold Wing or suggest that Honda got it wrong.
Quite the opposite.
It begins with the belief that Honda created one of the finest touring motorcycles ever built.
The question isn’t how to fix it.
The question is what might be possible if its mission expanded.
What Does “ET” Mean?
ET stands for Expedition Touring.
To me, Expedition Touring is more than a name. It’s a design philosophy.
An expedition isn’t defined by crossing continents or climbing mountains. It’s defined by purpose, preparation, and the willingness to continue when the journey becomes uncertain.
Touring is about comfort. Refinement. Reliability. Covering long distances without exhausting the rider.
Project ET asks whether those two ideas can coexist.
Can a motorcycle retain the comfort and confidence of a luxury touring machine while gaining the ability to venture farther when the pavement ends, the weather changes, or curiosity points toward an unfamiliar road?
I believe it can.
The Concept
Project ET is not about building another adventure bike.
It isn’t about chasing horsepower, increasing suspension travel just because it looks impressive, or bolting unnecessary accessories onto an already capable motorcycle.
Every change should have a reason.
Every component should solve a problem.
Every compromise should be intentional.
The goal is to preserve everything riders already love about the Gold Wing while thoughtfully expanding its capabilities.
Imagine finishing a thousand-mile highway day and not hesitating when the last twenty miles are gravel.
Imagine a motorcycle that inspires confidence when the route changes unexpectedly.
Imagine a touring machine that quietly encourages you to keep going instead of turning around.
That is the heart of Project ET.
Not extreme off-road capability.
Not competition.
Not excess.
Simply a motorcycle designed to make more journeys possible.
Why Share the Project?
Because ideas become better when they’re challenged.
This project isn’t presented as the final answer.
It’s an invitation to think differently about what a touring motorcycle could become.
As the project evolves, I’ll be documenting the design process, engineering decisions, successes, failures, tradeoffs, and lessons learned along the way.
Some ideas may survive.
Others may not.
That’s part of good engineering.
The destination matters.
But so does the process.
Looking Ahead
This is only the beginning.
Future entries will explore individual systems, design decisions, engineering challenges, and the reasoning behind them.
Nothing here is presented as perfect.
Everything here is presented with intention.
Because every machine worth building starts as an idea worth pursuing.
Project ET is still just a concept.
But every great expedition begins long before the engine starts.
Sometimes it begins with a sketch.
Sometimes with a conversation.
And sometimes…
It begins with a simple question.
What if?
