For years, my work boots were Thorogoods.

If you’ve spent any time in the trades, that name probably doesn’t surprise you. They’re dependable, comfortable once broken in, and have earned their reputation over decades. Mine certainly did. They carried me through years of service calls, machine rooms, construction sites, and long days on concrete.

They’re still a boot I’d recommend.

In fact, they’ll eventually receive their own long-term review here because they’ve earned it.

But after years in the same boots, I decided it was time for a change.

Not because the Thorogoods had failed me.

Because I wanted to find out if something could work even better.

As an elevator mechanic , I spend my days climbing ladders, kneeling in machine rooms and car tops, walking concrete corridors, standing for hours, and crawling into places that weren’t designed for comfort.

A work boot isn’t just footwear.

It’s a tool.

And like every tool, it should make the job easier—not become another problem to solve.

The Keen Liberty caught my attention because it promised something I value more every year: comfort without sacrificing durability.

Most importantly, it offered a wider toe box than many traditional work boots.

After years of wearing more conventional boots, I wanted to see what that difference actually meant over a full workday.

First Impressions Don’t Matter Here

One thing you’ll notice about Tradesman’s Ledger is that I don’t believe in reviewing products the day they’re unboxed.

Anyone can tell you how something feels after walking around their living room.

That isn’t a review.

That’s an introduction.

A real review begins after the honeymoon is over.

After twelve-hour shifts.

After sweat.

After kneeling on concrete.

After climbing ladders.

After the boot has had every opportunity to prove itself—or disappoint.

The First Weeks

The transition wasn’t perfect.

The Liberty’s toe box immediately felt more natural than what I had grown accustomed to, and I appreciated having room for my toes to spread instead of being squeezed together.

The downside came from other areas.

The taller 8-inch upper wasn’t my favorite. It pressed against my calf more than I liked, especially during long days.

I experimented with different insoles, adjusted my lacing several times, and even considered adding false tongues to relieve pressure across the top of my foot.

Rather than deciding too quickly, I kept wearing them.

That’s part of the process.

Sometimes equipment needs adjustment.

Sometimes it simply needs time.

And sometimes those early annoyances reveal themselves to be deal-breakers—or disappear entirely.

What I’ve Learned So Far

Several things became clear almost immediately.

The wider toe box wasn’t marketing.

It was real.

The boots felt stable.

The safety toe never cramped my feet the way some boots have in the past.

Long shifts on concrete became noticeably more comfortable as the boots began to break in.

More importantly, they stopped demanding my attention.

Good equipment tends to disappear.

When you stop thinking about your boots during a twelve-hour day, that’s usually a good sign.

The Verdict—For Now

This isn’t the final review.

It’s the beginning of a long-term evaluation.

The Keen Liberty has made a strong first impression, but first impressions don’t earn a place in the Ledger.

Time does.

Miles do.

Work does.

I’ll continue wearing these boots through service calls, construction, machine rooms, and everyday life.

When enough time has passed, I’ll come back and tell you whether they truly earned their place.
